| Does your story relate to?: |
Employee misconduct |
| Describe what happened: |
I ran a factory with my business partner. My business partner's
son was responsible for managing the factory on a day to day basis.
One day one of our employees drove into the staff car park drunk.
In fact, he was so drunk as soon as he parked he fell asleep at the
wheel. My partner's son was so angry when he found out that he went
out to his car armed with a CO2 fire extinguisher and let it off in
his face. The employee was a burly man, woke up, got out of the car
and thumped the manager who went out cold. |
| What was the outcome?: |
By the time I arrived on the scene the incident was all over. I
was so scared that the employee would end up suing us that I offered
to employ the worker as my personal gardener in my private home -
there was no way he could carry on working a the factory. |
| What was the cost (if any) to your business?: |
There wasn't so much a cost to the business but a cost to me. I
ended up paying this employee as my gardener for several months when
all he did was sit in my garden and get a sun tan!! |
| What (if anything) would you have done differently?: |
In future I would make sure that my managers are fully conversant
with employment procedures and know what they can and cannot do. |
